After a while, I start to lag behind.
Like a loving teacher, she glances over her shoulder to give me a look, a commanding look that says “you can do better than that”. I lag even further behind as Atma, like a feather, continues to stroll up the mountain. The negative mind takes over and I start to curse the whole expedition. As I’m about to totally give up, I realize we are only a few steps away from the peak.
We reach the top. I stand on top of one of the big rocks with my eyes wide opening taking in as much of the landscape as possible. As I breathe in more oxygen, I begin to relax. I reach for my bag and take out a bottle of water. I gulp the water down like a camel. Atma totally ignores her bottle of water, clearly she is not as thirsty as I am, actually not thirsty at all! We stand there – student and teacher – with nothing to say. Together, we quietly observe the scenery.
Then it occurs to me: one is never alone. Atma, the divine soul, is always there saying “you can do much better than that”. Truly, each one of us has an Atma.
