Last week, my elder brother came to visit me for a few
days in Cape Town. The first evening was full of catching up, chit-chat and, as
usual a bit of serious talk crept in. It was almost midnight, and we were on
our third cup of tea – he was sitting on the couch, and I was on the floor with
a throw over my legs.
My brother was sharing with me a story of someone who is
currently going through some forgiveness battle. It was in the middle of that conversation, when he said:
“Certain things CANNOT be changed, they CANNOT be undone. Forgiveness and
acceptance is key. . . “
So, today as I was surfing the net and doing some reading
on forgiveness, I came across this quote.
on forgiveness, I came across this quote.
“There is no such thing as a “broken family.”
Family is family, and is not determined by marriage certificates, divorce
papers, and adoption documents. Families are made in the heart. The only time
family becomes null is when those ties in the heart are cut. If you cut those
ties, those people are not your family. If you make those ties, those people
are your family. And if you hate those ties, those people will still be your
family because whatever you hate will always be with you.” C. JoyBell C.

Suddenly – even though the conversation with my brother
took place a week ago – its meaning has just managed to find its way beyond my
ears. Only today has its meaning finally landed in my heart.

It is only now I realize that forgiveness does not come
in a nicely wrapped gift box. Of course, forgiveness is a gift – but one will have to first
jump over some hurdles before accessing this divine blessing.

As for now, jumping over the hurdles it is!
